Former bikie gang member Toby Mitchell has been charged with trafficking ice.

The tattoo shop owner appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of ice and was remanded in custody.

"It's a situation where a commercial quantity of ice ... was found in a motor vehicle allegedly being driven by the accused man," prosecutor Simon Zebrowski told the court.

Mitchell was arrested on Thursday after his car was searched for ice as part of a joint operation with Australian Federal Police, the court heard.

The 40-year-old will reappear in court on December 18.
