'Drunk hoon' accused of punching NSW cop

A man will face court accused of leading police on a drunken pursuit and striking an officer in the face.

A man has been charged with punching a cop in the face, doing a drunken burnout in front of a squad car and leading police on a pursuit.

The 34-year-old allegedly did the burnout in front of highway officers at Shoalhaven Heads in the Lake Illawarra region of NSW on Saturday afternoon before speeding away.

He continued driving even after his tyres were shredded by road spikes, stopping only after getting stuck in traffic.

The man allegedly threatened police with a knife before striking one officer in the face as he was placed under arrest.

He later returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.136 when he was breath-tested at the police station, it will be alleged.

The 34-year-old was charged with a range of police assault, pursuit, drink driving and other offences, and refused bail at Wollongong Local Court on Sunday to reappear on Monday.
