Duck defender banned from Vic wetlands

A Melbourne court has fined an anti-duck hunting campaigner and banned him from Victorian wetlands and hunting grounds for six months.

An anti-duck shooting campaigner has been banned from Victorian wetlands for six months for obstructing a game officer at the start of the state's hunting season.

Long time anti-duck hunting campaigner Laurie Levy, 74, was banned from entering hunting areas or state game reserves for six-months at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

He was also fined $250 for entering the water and $500 for obstructing a game officer during the opening of Victoria's 2015 recreational duck shooting season on March 21.

The ban excludes him from campaigning in wetlands at the start of the 2016 season, but Laurie said prominent Animals Australia campaigner Lyn White would take his place.

"If I'm kept off the wetlands then Lyn will take my place. So if the season goes ahead we'll still be out there to fight as hard as we ever have," Mr Levy told AAP on Wednesday.

Ms White was in court to support Mr Levy and said he had the full support of Animals Australia.

"If the shooting lobby thinks removing Mr Levy from the wetlands will take the spotlight off them, then they will be sorely disappointed," she said in a statement.
