Dutch continue to lead solar car race

The Nuon team from the Netherlands continues to lead in the World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide.

Defending champions Nuon continue to lead the 2017 race for solar-powered cars from Darwin to Adelaide.

The Dutch team's Nuna car has covered more than 1500km to take a near 30km lead over its nearest rival in the 3000km World Solar Challenge.

In second place is the Novum car from the University of Michigan with another team from the Netherlands, Solar Team Twente, in third place but a further 20km behind.

The only Australian car still racing was the entrant from Western Sydney University which was holding down seventh spot late on Tuesday.

If the Nuon team leads all the way into Adelaide it will be their seventh victory in the event that they have come to dominate in recent years.

They had been expected to reach Adelaide early on Thursday but storms moving across SA on Wednesday could slow their progress.

In this year's race, teams from more than 20 countries are taking part, including entrants from Iran, Belgium, Chile and the US. It marks 30 years since the first World Solar Challenge in 1987.
