Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is standing by his "no kids in detention" assertion, but admits that some children will cycle through the system from time to time.

Mr Dutton has dismissed as "too cute" Fairfax Media claims that at least two children remain in immigration detention, saying all those who had arrived by boat had been released.

"We have people who overstay, families who arrive on false travel documents, people who had their visas cancelled ... they are taken into immigration detention until they can be put on the first plane out," he told radio 2GB on Thursday.
