Eagles, Dockers agree on new derby medal

Eleven West Coast and Fremantle players are set to be handed retrospective Ross Glendinning medals for best-afield honours in the AFL's western derbies.

Dean Kemp, Adrian Fletcher, Glen Jakovich, and Guy McKenna are among the AFL greats set to be handed retrospective Ross Glendinning medals for best-afield performances in western derbies.

Fremantle caused a stir earlier this year when they threatened to scrap the derby award because the name didn't feature one of their past greats.

The Ross Glendinning medal was named after the inaugural West Coast captain.

Under a compromise, the award for future winners will be the Glendinning-Allan medal - featuring the name of inaugural Fremantle skipper Ben Allan.

The original Ross Glendinning medal has been handed out since 2001.

As part of the renaming process it was decided retrospective Ross Glendinning medals will be handed out for the years between 1995-2000.

Former Eagles player Brett Heady was named the winner for both derbies in 1995 while other West Coast legends Jakovich, McKenna, Kemp and Chris Lewis were also named winners.

Fletcher will go down in history as the first Dockers player to win the award after being named best afield in the round 16 derby of 1999.

Dockers star Clive Waterhouse was named the winner in round 21, 2000 for his seven-goal effort in a one-point win over West Coast.

The retrospective medals will be handed out at next week's western derby at Optus Stadium.
