Eagles push to get Kennedy fit for finals

West Coast coach Adam Simpson is confident star forward Josh Kennedy will be fit for the club's AFL qualifying final against Collingwood.

West Coast are set to "throw caution to the wind" in their attempt to get Josh Kennedy up and firing in time for the AFL finals.

Kennedy has missed the past five games because of a stress fracture in his right shin, and needs to prove his fitness before next week's qualifying final against Collingwood.

The fact the match will be played on a Saturday instead of the Thursday gives Kennedy an extra two days.

But coach Adam Simpson says the time has come to ramp up the 31-year-old's training loads rather than play it safe.

"I think we've just got to get him out there and throw caution to the wind," Simpson said.

"He can't not do anything and just play. It's been too long. So he's really got to push himself.

"He knows what he has to do."

Kennedy has endured an injury-plagued year.

The 218-game veteran missed the first three rounds with foot and knee issues, and he was sidelined between rounds 14-16 with a stress fracture near his right knee.

But Kennedy has proven before he can come back firing after long injury lay-offs and Simpson says it will be worth the risk playing him against Collingwood.

If Kennedy can partner Jack Darling in attack, it would give West Coast's forward line a formidable look.

Goalsneaks Jamie Cripps, Liam Ryan, Mark LeCras and Willie Rioli complement the tall timber well, and Simpson is excited at what he has at his disposal.

Eagles captain Shannon Hurn has played in just five winning finals during his 245-game career and he's urging West Coast's younger players to make the most of the opportunity that awaits them.

If West Coast win both their home finals, they will go straight through to the grand final.

"You always want to be able to play in the finals. We've got a great opportunity now. You don't want to look too far ahead," Hurn said.

"I have a lot of enjoyment now about helping and passing on experiences to the group and the younger players."
