Early voting in two South Australian by-elections is set to open with electoral officials expecting strong interest from those wishing to cast an early ballot.

Residents in the suburban seats of Cheltenham and Enfield will go to the polls on February 9 following the resignation from parliament of former premier Jay Weatherill and former attorney-general John Rau.

Labor is expected to retain both seats with the Liberal Party opting not to run any endorsed candidates as it focuses on the looming federal election.

The ALP candidate in Cheltenham is SA Unions boss Joe Szakacs while in Enfield lawyer Andrea Michaels has been endorsed by Labor.

The SA Electoral Commission says early voting centres in both seats will be open from Tuesday and will operate on extended hours, including until 8pm on Thursdays.

Electoral Commissioner Mick Sherry says the number of people casting an early ballot rose by 50 per cent at last year's state election compared to the previous poll in 2014.
