Earthquake hits north of Java

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake has struck in the Java Sea, though no tsunami warning was issued.

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake has struck deep under the Java Sea.

The US Geological Survey said it happened at 7.25am local time on Wednesday (11.25am AEDT), about 200km northeast of Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in western Java, at a depth of 654km.

No tsunami warning was issued, and no damage or casualties were immediately reported by authorities.
