Earthquake hits remote WA region

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has struck a remote area of Western Australia and was felt about 130km away.

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has hit a remote part of Western Australia and was felt in the nearest town, about 130km away.

The quake struck on Wednesday morning in an isolated area east of Norseman, with Geoscience Australia saying it could have caused damage up to 10km away.

Norseman Hardware employee Jammie-Lee Bennett said she felt the ground tremble.

"A paint tin at the front of the store rattled and that's when I realised it wasn't just a passing truck," Ms Bennett told AAP.

She says most of the town felt it and many took to social media to share their experiences.

About 18 months ago, Norseman had a series of earthquakes, she said, but none as large.

"I think when we first got them everyone sort of panicked but now we're like 'oh yeah, another one'."

There have so far been no reports of injuries or damage.
