A strong 7.8-magnitude quake has hit Indonesia's north Sumatra, according to the US Geological Survey, prompting local authorities and Thailand to issue a tsunami alert.

A strong 7.8-magnitude quake has hit Indonesia's north Sumatra, according to the US Geological Survey, prompting local authorities and Thailand to issue a tsunami alert.

The quake struck at a depth of 46 kilometres, just off northern Sumatra, at 5:15 am (0815 EAST Tuesday), according to USGS.
