East Timor's new prime minister Taur Matan Ruak has been sworn in after he won the elections in May.

East Timor's new prime minister has been sworn in in Dili.

Taur Matan Ruak's swearing-in took place in front of dignitaries in the capital on Friday.

Elections were held in May amid a period of political stalemate in the country.

The prime minister's real name is Jose Maria Vasconcelos but he is more commonly known as Taur Matan Ruak, his nom de guerre during his time as resistance commander under Indonesian rule.

He served as president from 2012 to 2017.
