EBay, Telefonica's 02 in smartphone app deal in UK

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - EBay Inc said on Tuesday that its mobile shopping application would be pre-loaded onto smartphones sold by Telefonica's 02 unit in the United Kingdom.

EBay, which has made a big push into mobile, said it was its first pre-install deal anywhere in the world. Other Telefonica markets worldwide will follow, said eBay, without providing a timeframe.

The company's mobile app allows consumers to buy and sell goods over their phones. The value of all goods sold via mobile at eBay, which includes online payments unit PayPal, is expected to double this year from nearly $2 billion in 2010.

Telefonica, the euro zone's biggest telecommunications firm, services some 22 million U.K. customers through its 02 unit.
