Matt Ebden has put his hand up for Davis Cup duties after posting the biggest win of his grand slam career at the Australian Open on Monday.

Eben upset 16th seed John Isner 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-3 to be the first Australian through to the second round at Melbourne Park.

Australia's No.2-ranked men's player behind Nick Kyrgios, Ebden had never previously beaten a top-20 player at a grand slam.

Australia host Germany in the first round of the World Group from February 2-4 in Brisbane and Ebden was quick to put his hand up for selection.

The 30-year-old has played in four Davis Cup ties and has an unblemished 5-0 record over four singles and one doubles appearances.

"I had that No.2 singles spot and a doubles spot as well a bunch of times," Ebden said.

"I love that environment and I was successful in those so that's definitely been one of my little goals I've been working towards."

Ebden has produced some of his best tennis recently, also collecting the scalp of world No.6 Marin Cilic last week at Kooyong.

He has climbed to world No.78 after starting 2017 ranked 699 in the world following a frustrating run with injury.

Ebden said he wasn't surprised to beat Isner despite the American dominating their recent battles.

He felt his top-notch reaction time would hold in him good stead against Isner's notable big serve.

"I'm one of the best sort of agility movers in the world - my reactions, things like that and I work hard on that," Ebden said.

"I know if I execute and do the things that I was trying to do I would give myself a good shot at winning.

"I'm getting used to winning against these top guys often now and losing sometimes but still being just about there. I know the level that I can play."

Edben will next face Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov on Wednesday.
