Australian track cycling star Annette Edmondson has won the omnium in New Zealand, just over a month out from the world championships.

The 2015 omnium world champion took out the event at the fifth World Cup round in Cambridge.

Edmondson finished the four-event discipline on 131 points, eight clear of Canadian Allison Beveridge.

The Australian won the scratch race and elimination, was fourth in the tempo race and was runner-up in the points race to secure the overall win.

"In terms of the upcoming world championships, it is a good result," Edmondson said.

"We have a really strong group in Australia with a lot of girls knocking on the door and putting their hands up, so I think my biggest competition is going to be getting the spot."

It is the second medal for Australia at the World Cup round after silver in the men's team sprint.

Several of Australia's top track riders are bypassing the New Zealand round as they prepare for the worlds at the end of next month in Poland.
