Parramatta have received a significant boost ahead of the new NRL season, with rugby league's governing body announcing the Eels have avoided a four-points penalty for their salary cap dramas.

The Eels were facing the possibility of starting the season on minus-four premiership points due to salary cap indiscretions last season.

However, NRL head of integrity Nick Weeks said on Wednesday the Eels had satisfactorily completed the core governance changes recommended by an independent review.

"Based on the work undertaken by the club, the Parramatta Eels will not be docked any competition points prior to the start of the premiership," Weeks said in a statement.

"Both the NRL and the Eels believe these governance changes will help the club become more stable and, ultimately, more successful and that is what the fans and members want to see."

Parramatta start their NRL season in the 2016 premiership opener against Brisbane on Thursday night at Pirtek Stadium.
