Former Parramatta Eels football manager Jason Irvine has been charged over the NRL club's salary cap scandal.

NSW Police arrested the 42-year-old in Leichhardt on Monday and charged him with knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime, dishonestly obtaining property by deception, and acting with intent to pervert the course of justice.

Irvine appeared at Newtown Local Court on Monday and was granted bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.

The Eels were stripped of 12 competition points and fined $1 milllion last year after they were found guilty of cheating the salary cap by the NRL.

In an NRL investigation, the Eels were found guilty of funnelling money to players through inflated invoices and dodgy third party payments, circumventing salary cap rules.

Irvine became the first person charged by police over the scandal.

It was last year reported that Irvine and former chief executive Scott Seward had admitted to NRL investigators to funnelling cash to players via under-the-table deals.

According to interview transcripts obtained by Fairfax Media, Irvine had admitted he had engaged in several schemes to pay disgruntled players.

He allegedly admitted to taking cash from merchandise takings and then giving it to players.

He also said he had been involved in a scheme in which two suppliers were told to lodge inflated invoices with the surplus money then returned to the club and paid to the players.
