Egypt frees ailing Morsi aide

The family of Khaled al-Qazzaz, a former aide to ousted Egyptian Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, says Qazzaz has been freed.

Egypt has freed an ailing former aide to ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following 18 months in jail without charge.

His Canada-based family says Qazzaz has been released from hospital where he had undergone spinal surgery.

Qazzaz, an adviser to Morsi on foreign affairs, was arrested along with hundreds of other aides and members of his Muslim Brotherhood on July 3, 2013, the same day the army deposed the former president.

Since Morsi's overthrow, a government crackdown on his supporters has left more than 1,400 people dead and thousands imprisoned. Dozens have been sentenced to death after speedy trials.

Morsi is also behind bars and facing trial on a number of charges.
