Egyptian Al-Jazeera case resumes in June

Closing arguments by prosecutors in the Egyptian retrial of two Al-Jazeera English journalists are expected to begin on June 1.

Prosecutors in Egypt are expected to begin their closing arguments on June 1 in the retrial of two Al-Jazeera English journalists who were colleagues of deported Australian journalist Peter Greste.

Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed were released on bail in February. Greste, also charged in the case, was deported from Egypt the same month.

Fahmy, a Canadian who is Al-Jazeera English's acting bureau chief in Egypt made the comment about the timing of closing arguments after a court hearing in the case on Saturday.

Fahmy is being tried with Egyptian producer Mohammed on charges accusing them of being part of a terrorist group and airing falsified footage intended to damage national security.

The journalists insist they were just doing their job. Human rights organisations and media groups have criticised their trial.
