Five Egyptian police officers are dead and three others have been wounded in a jihadist attack on the Sinai Peninsula.

Five Egyptian security officers have been killed and three others wounded in a jihadist attack on the Sinai Peninsula.

The attack took place when gunmen opened fire on Wednesday night on a checkpoint in al-Arish, killing five policemen, government officials said.

An Islamic State affiliate claimed responsibility in a statement released online.

The jihadists said they ambushed a group of police officers near the al-Maidan area, east of al-Arish.

Meanwhile, officials said among the dead were three officers, two captains and a lieutenant colonel.
