A spokesperson for the mine operator KGHM said the accident happened 600m underground at the Runda copper mine in western region of Lower Silesia.
"The rescue operation is difficult because huge amounts of rocks have to be removed," KGHM spokesman Dariusz Wyborski told Reuters.

Earlier, four people walked out of the mine on their own, but there has been no contact with the other 18 for over two hours.
THe KGHM is a state-controlled mine and is Europe's second largest copper producer.
