An empty car has rolled down a driveway and killed an elderly woman in Sydney's southwest.

An elderly woman has died after she was struck by an empty car that rolled down her driveway in Sydney's southwest.

Police said the woman, 84, was putting out her garbage bins about 8.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday when a Toyota Corolla rolled down her driveway at Georges Hall.

She was pinned under the car and suffered severe leg injuries.

Neighbours gave her first aid until paramedics arrived.

She was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition and later died.

The woman's grandson was also taken to hospital suffering shock.

The car is being examined by police.
