Election elevates new batch of politicians

There are plenty of colourful politicians to watch over the next term of federal parliament.

NEW FACES TO WATCH IN PARLIAMENT

LINDA BURNEY

The new Labor member for Barton is Australia's first ever indigenous female federal MP. She comes well qualified for Canberra, having served in the NSW state parliament for 13 years and rising to deputy opposition leader.

REBEKHA SHARKIE

Nick Xenophon Team's only representative in the House of Representatives is a former member of the Liberal Party and staffer to Liberal MP Jamie Briggs, who she defeated to take Mayo.

DERRYN HINCH

The "human headline" is perhaps the best-known media figure ever to make the move to federal politics. The 72-year-old anti-pedophile campaigner comes to the Senate with abundant life experience including cancer, five marriages and a spell in jail.

PAULINE HANSON

Back in 1996 she warned Australia was in danger of being "swamped by Asians". Now it's also Muslims. Her election to the Senate in 2016 shows there are a very large number of Australians who feel they aren't being heard by the mainstream parties.

JULIAN LEESER

He's successor to Philip Ruddock in the blue-ribbon Liberal seat of Berowra. He's a former associate to High Court judge Ian Callinan, adviser to Tony Abbott and Philip Ruddock and director of the Liberal think tank, the Menzies Research Institute.

MICHAEL SUKKAR

Where Liberal MPs fell like flies and other struggled to survive, the member for Deakin actually improved his margin. He's been tipped as a possible new frontbencher.

MIKE KELLY

The former army officer ended Eden-Monaro's long-running reputation as a seat which always held by whichever party won government. This is his second time as MP for Eden-Monaro. He'll a possible return to Labor's frontbench.
