Electric car to rise like iPhone: minister

Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg has hit back at critics of electric cars saying those against subsidies now will probably be buying them in 10 years.

The rise of electric cars will be like the iPhone, Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg predicts.

The minister has hit back at critics and some coalition colleagues who will ask the party room to resist any new subsidies for electric cars, saying those who ridicule the vehicles today will probably be buying them in a decade's time.

"I think of what is going to happen with electric vehicles in the transport sector as equivalent to what the iPhone did to the communications sector," Mr Frydenberg told Sky News on Tuesday.
