Eleven killed in Congo fighting

Ten militia members and one civilian have been killed in clashes in Congo's east.

Eleven people have been killed in fighting between the Congolese army and an armed group in the east of the country.

Clashes between the army and the Patriotic Resistance Front of Ituri, an ethnically based militia, took place overnight in the villages of Kienge and Sibado.

Ten militia members and one civilian were killed, General Jean-Pierre Bongwangela told DPA.

He said two government soldiers were also seriously injured.

Dozens of armed groups operate in eastern Congo, which was ravaged by the 1996-2003 Congo wars.
