Eleventh Qld case of black lung confirmed

Queensland has recorded its eleventh confirmed case - the fourth in the past week - of black lung disease, and more are expected to emerge.

A 56-year-old man who worked at an underground coal mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin has become the state's eleventh confirmed case of black lung disease.

The Department of Natural Resources and Mines issued a statement confirming the case on Monday afternoon.

It is the fourth confirmed case in the past week.

Black lung, officially known as pneumoconiosis, is caused by long-term exposure to fine airborne coal dust in areas with poor ventilation.

The department said Queensland's mining companies were offering for workers to have new x-rays taken and to have existing x-rays re-read.

"It is expected ... that further cases will be identified from this extra activity and as miners respond to the focus on coal workers' pneumoconiosis," it said in a written statement.

During the past week, three workers, aged 39, 62 and 55, who all worked in the Bowen Basin, were diagnosed with the disease.

The CFMEU has repeatedly said it is aware of dozens of cases yet to be acknowledged by the department.

A Senate committee has been investigating the re-emergence of black lung, including issues around detection and treatment.

Its interim report recommended the federal government establish a national coal dust monitoring group and states and territories adopt the national standard for coal dust exposure.
