An elite Brisbane school has warned its students and their parents of a potential outbreak of measles after a year 7 student was diagnosed with the virus.

Ambrose Treacy College, at Indooroopilly, emailed an alert on Monday after a student was on Saturday found to have measles, according to News Corp report.

Measles is contagious, and a person may be infectious from about five days before the onset of the rash and four days after the rash appears, the email said.

"As with the majority of our students, this young man was very involved in many facets of College life participating with a group at Queensland Catholic Schools & Colleges Music Festival on Saturday morning and playing in an ATC Year 7 rugby team."

Parents have since been advised to check their children for symptoms that include fever, tiredness, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, sore eyes and a discomfort when looking at light.
