Federal Labor frontbencher Kate Ellis has vowed to continue to work hard for the people of her Adelaide electorate after a decision to quit politics at the next election.

Ms Ellis is expected to stand down soon as Labor's spokeswoman for early childhood education and development but will serve out her full term in her marginal SA seat.

"I made a commitment to the people of Adelaide at the last election, and I know politicians say this from time, but I hope that you'll trust me when I tell you that being the local member for Adelaide has always been the most important part of my job," she said after announcing her decision on Thursday.

"Representing this community, standing up for these residents is what I'm so proud to do.

"I intend to see that through."

Ms Ellis said her decision to leave the parliament was motivated by her desire to spend more time with her family, particularly her young son Sam, who will be starting school in the next few years.

She said it was a decision taken on what was best for her family at this time and she hoped it would not discourage other young women, including young mothers, from standing for parliament.

"I'd hate for my legacy to be sending a message that you can't be a young woman and go into federal parliament," she said.
