Emergency alert for Vic lightning fires

Lightning has sparked multiple fires in a Victorian state park, with some residents being told it is too late to leave.

Lightning has sparked multiple fires in Victoria's Bunyip State Park and emergency warnings are in place.

People at Cornucopia, Garfield North, Maryknoll, Tonimbuk and Tynong North are being told it is too late to leave and they should shelter indoors.

"There are multiple bushfires in and around the Bunyip State Park that are out of control," the alert reads.

The fire is travelling northeast towards Tonimbuk and Garfield North, threatening lives and homes.

Lightning moved through the region in the hills southeast of Melbourne about 3.30pm on Friday, authorities said.

The fires started to be reported from 4.30pm.

The terrain is difficult for fire trucks to access and aircraft have been called in to assist.

A Watch and Act alert is also in place for nearby Gembrook, Whites Corner and Beenak.

"Firefighters have not been able to stop the spread of the fire. Staying close to a building you can shelter in is the safest option as conditions can change suddenly," the alert says.
