Emergency birth after NSW bakery illness

A woman has undergone an emergency caesarean after she was admitted to hospital with suspected food poisoning from a bakery in Sydney.

A pregnant woman has reportedly been forced to have an emergency caesarean after she was struck by suspected food poisoning from a Sydney bakery.

Ashley Buchanan, who was 35-weeks pregnant, and her husband each ate a hot chicken roll from the Box Village Bakery in Sylvania on Sunday and were admitted to Wollongong hospital that night, according to the Nine Network.

When Mrs Buchanan's condition worsened on Tuesday, doctors performed an emergency caesarean and found her placenta had ruptured.

Mr Buchanan was reportedly too sick to witness the birth of his daughter Ava, who is healthy and well.

More than 150 people presented themselves to Sutherland and St George hospitals over the weekend with suspected food poisoning after eating at the bakery, with 27 of those people admitted for further treatment, a NSW Health spokeswoman confirmed on Friday.

Initial tests showed the patients had suffered salmonella poisoning, she said.

The NSW Food Authority closed the bakery on Monday after a prohibition order was issued.

Environmental and food samples taken from the bakery are being tested.
