Staff at a design school in New York were baffled after receiving a letter addressed to "unknown Asian" in the mail, containing a US $784 bill for ambulance services.
Christine Ahn, who works in the dean's office at Parsons the New School for Design, said she was reluctant to open the bill at first, the New York Post reported.
"I hesitated to open it but then I was like, 'Well I could be an unknown Asian,'" she said.
"The funny thing for us was that there are so many Asians in this school."
The letter inside asked for payment for services including an ambulance ride, oxygen and mileage, and was addressed from the New York Fire Department (FDNY).
According to the Post, a source from the FDNY said woman who lived in a dorm at the New School required ambulance services in November, but attending officers were unable to find out her name.
Emergency services workers wrote "unknown" in the first name field and "Asian" in the last name field, which remained in place when the bill was auto-generated.
The letter was then apparently unchecked before being dispatched in the mail.
A spokesperson for the FDNY said changes would be made to address the problem.
