Emergency warning downgraded for NSW fire

A change in weather conditions has prompted an emergency bushfire warning for residents on NSW's South Coast to be downgraded to "watch and act".

The warning for an out-of-control bushfire on NSW's South Coast has been downgraded to a "watch and act" after a favourable change in weather conditions.

The fire, burning at Yankees Gap in Bemboka, had sparked an emergency warning after strong northwesterly winds pushed the blaze towards Bega, with embers flying ahead of the blaze on Saturday afternoon.

"Conditions have started to ease, although winds are strong, temperatures have dropped dramatically," said NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Greg Allan.

Firefighters remain in "property protection mode" as a number of structures remain under threat, he said.

There have been unconfirmed reports of property lost, but NSW RFS had not been able to assess any properties at this stage, Mr Allan said on Saturday night.

A total fire ban was in effect on Saturday for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Central Ranges, Southern Ranges, Far South Coast, Northern Slopes and North Western regions.

Improved conditions have been forecast across NSW for Sunday, although a high fire danger rating remains in place for the eastern half of the state.
