A bushfire has destroyed 540 hectares of scrub on Kangaroo Island as it burns out of control, posing a threat to lives and property.

The Country Fire Service has issued an emergency warning for the fire at Gosse, on the island's southern coast, about 23 kilometres from Parndana.

The CFS says conditions in the area are continually changing with northwesterly winds pushing the blaze towards Vivonne Bay as it actively spots up to 500 metres ahead of the fire front.

About 40 firefighters were on the scene on Thursday afternoon supported by four fire bombing aircraft.

Arrangements were also being made to bring in extra resources from the South Australian mainland.

The CFS said the fire continued to pose a threat to anyone directly in its path and it would soon be too dangerous for people to leave the area.

As very hot conditions persisted across SA, a second fire north of Adelaide also damaged buildings and glasshouses on a property near Two Wells.

Any threat posed by the blaze had reduced but locals were still urged to take care.

Temperatures on Thursday climbed into the low 40s in some regional centres with the mercury also hitting 40C in Adelaide.

Total fire bans were imposed in five districts, the west coast, the lower Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and across the Mt Lofty Ranges.

For Friday, severe bushfire conditions were declared across eight districts.
