Queensland's Shadow Treasurer Scott Emerson plans to contest the new Brisbane seat of Maiwar after learning his existing electorate will vanish.

Mr Emerson's seat of Indooroopilly will disappear under a dramatic shake-up of Queensland's electoral districts.

"I live in the new seat of Maiwar. I'll be running for that seat," he told ABC radio on Friday, but wouldn't be drawn on a likely contest with Labor minister Steven Miles whose neighbouring electorate of Mt Coot-tha will also disappear.

Dr Miles, who is the environment minister, said he'd contest the next election but wouldn't say in which seat.

"Regardless of what these maps mean for me, I'll be running at the next state election," he told reporters in Cairns.

"Politics is tough on families. We're established in the community I'm currently representing ... I haven't yet had a chance to discuss this properly with my wife and my family."
