A long-legged suspect with Australian heritage has led police in California's Silicon Valley on a wild goose chase.
Actually, it was a wild emu chase.
Morgan Hill Police Department officers had plenty of fun using social media on the weekend to keep the public up to date with their pursuit of an emu that escaped from a local farm.
"#MHPD officers in foot pursuit," Morgan Hill police wrote on their Twitter account.
"Suspect has a mean look about her.
"Unknown weapons or warrants."
When they eventually captured the emu they announced it in tongue-in-beak style with a "wanted poster" and photo of the hotfooted emu.
"Detained without incident," the police posted.
"Charges pending. No officers (or birds) injured."
Morgan Hill, located on the southern tip of Silicon Valley, is one of America's wealthiest areas.
Other police departments joined in the fun on social media, including Sunnyvale officers who commented on the emu mug shot posted by Morgan Hill.
"Fella looks pretty EMUsed for being captured," Sunnyvale tweeted.
Fremantle Police Department asked if she had "priors".
Morgan Hill police replied: "She was a little chirpy with officers".
Emus are common across the US, with some Americans keeping them as exotic pets while farmers raise them for their meat, eggs, oil, feathers and hide.
