Amazon.com Inc says it plans to stop supporting on-device encryption for Fire tablets running Fire OS 5, the latest version of its operating system for the gadgets.

"It was a feature few customers were actually using," an Amazon spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

On-device encryption allows the user to protect the device, with a password or other means, from thieves or others seeking access to the data on the gadget
