After more than 60 years of car making, the last Holden to be built in Adelaide will roll off the line in October.

Holden will cease manufacturing at its Elizabeth plant on October 20, it announced on Friday.

The announcement comes more than three years after 2017 was flagged by Holden as the final year it would make cars in Australia.

Almost 1000 workers will remain employed at the plant until the last car rolls off the production line and more than 30,000 vehicles are expected to be built between now and October 20.

The company will then transition to become a sales group and vehicle importer.
