* 2011 Cricket World Cup - Ireland defeated England by three wickets
Everything appeared to be going to script when England won the toss, batted and posted 8-327 against the Irish in their third match of the tournament. At 5-111 in reply, the game seemed as good as done, before Kevin O'Brien (113) and Alex Cusack (47) combined for a 162-run sixth wicket partnership, putting Ireland in sight of victory. They got their with five balls to spare. England got out of the group stage thanks to a win over South Africa, but not before they suffered a further embarrassment at the hands of Bangladesh.
2014 World T20, Netherlands defeated England by 45 runs
At least when England lost to the Dutch at Lords in 2009, they could argue it was only by one run - but there was no such defence five years later. Chasing a meagre total of 134, the English were never really in the hunt. No batsman scored over 20 as they collapsed to be all out for 88 - still their equal-second lowest total in T20 history. The win sent them spiralling out of the competition and was qualifier Netherlands' only success of the tournament proper.
2015 Rugby World Cup, Wales 28, defeated England 25
It wasn't so much the fact that England lost to Wales, but the ramifications of it. Drawn in "the group of death", England stood at risk of becoming the first solo host to be knocked out in the group stages of their own Rugby World Cup as a result of the shock loss. A 20-point flogging a week later at the hands of Australia sealed their fate, bringing to a close Stuart Lancaster's four-year reign as coach.
Euro 2016, Iceland 2, defeated England 1
That a country of 330,000 people in their first major football tournament could knock off soccer-mad England seemed almost unfathomable until June this year. Then it happened. After England took the lead early in the round-of-16 fixture through a penalty, they suddenly found themselves 2-1 down after 16 minutes, forcing them to press for 74 minutes for an equaliser that never came. It brought to an end their hunt for an elusive first European title, the national coaching career of Roy Hodgson and the sporting pride of 53 million people.
2016 Test cricket, Bangladesh defeated England by 108 runs.
Bangladesh hadn't beaten anyone other than Zimbabwe or the West Indies in their 16-year Test history - until Sunday. Largely saved by a fine all-round performance from Ben Stokes in the first Test between the teams a week earlier (England scrambled to a 22-run victory), there was to be no rear-guard effort for the visitors this time. England lost 10-64 to crumble to arguably their worst Test defeat.
