England's new-look top order failed again on day one of the second Test against the West Indies, with the home team 3-61 at lunch on Friday.
Opener Mark Stoneman, in his second Test, was out for 19 and fellow newcomer Tom Westley went for three.
The experienced Alastair Cook, who made a double-century in England's innings victory in the first Test, was first man out for 11.
West Indies' seam bowlers had some morale-boosting early success, with the recalled Shannon Gabriel making the first breakthrough and Kemar Roach taking 2-21.
England captain Joe Root was called to rescue for England again and was 24 not out at the end of the session. He hit three fours and Dawid Malan was with him on three not out from 31 balls, underlining England's battles in the first session.
England are seeking a second series victory of the summer after beating South Africa but didn't make a forceful start at Headingley after Root won the toss and chose to bat.
Gabriel had Cook caught in the slips. Roach dismissed Westley lbw and then removed Stoneman to an edge behind to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich to reduce England to 3-37.
England has won four of their five Tests of the summer, including the innings and 209-run win over the West Indians in the first of three Tests.
