English backpacker knocked unconscious

A 29-year-old English backpacker has been knocked unconscious after being headbutted and punched in Coffs Harbour.

A man has been left unconscious after being punched outside a bar in Coffs Harbour.

The 29-year-old English backpacker was allegedly headbutted from behind by a 19-year-old man on the corner of Grafton and West High Streets in the city, on the north coast of New South Wales, on Saturday night.

The older man was then punched twice and knocked to the ground, police said. Emergency services were called and the man was taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The younger man fled and police established a crime scene, with CCTV footage being examined.

It is believed that the injured man did not know his attacker.
