Essendon make three changes for MCG clash

Essendon's hopes of an upset win over Carlton have been dealt a blow, with Craig Bird forced to miss the match because of a quad injury.

Essendon have made three changes for Sunday's AFL match against Carlton, with premiership player Craig Bird an enforced omission.

Bird, who played in the 2012 and 2014 grand finals with Sydney, suffered a quad injury on Anzac Day.

Martin Gleeson and Conor McKenna were both axed after the side's 69-point loss to Collingwood.

Top-up players James Polkinghorne, Ryan Crowley and Jonathan Simpkin were called up for the MCG match.

West Coast ruckman Scott Lycett will return from a one-game suspension on Sunday, when his side hosts Collingwood in Perth.

Lycett was promoted at the expense of Fraser McInnes.

The Magpies called on Tom Langdon, Tim Broomhead and Ben Sinclair to replace Taylor Adams (knee), Travis Varcoe (hamstring) and James Aish (omitted).

Meanwhile, Sydney defender Aliir Aliir and Brisbane's Ben Keays will both make their AFL debut at the Gabba on Sunday.

"We just want him to play to his strengths, just like he's done in our reserves," Swans coach John Longmire said of Aliir, who was was born in a Kenyan refugee camp to Sudanese parents.

"He's got a job this week, not only to fit into our back six accordingly but to make sure he competes hard."
