EU eyes in the sky watching reef's health

The European Union's special envoy for space is making his first trip to Australia and will attend the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide.

European eyes in the sky are helping Australia to monitor coral bleaching outbreaks on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Copernicus satellite program is also providing data to Australian scientists and farmers on the impact of drought and climate change on agricultural land.

Francois Rivasseau, the European Union's special envoy for space, is making his first trip to Australia and will attend the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide next week.

Mr Rivasseau sees more scope for co-operation between Australia and the EU's space agency.

"We are at the start of developing international activities," he told AAP.

Small Pacific islands could also benefit from the satellite data, he said.

The satellite program can also drill down to provide information on water pollution and measuring fish stocks.

Fisheries are important to the livelihoods of many poverty stricken Pacific Island nations.

A study has estimated illegal tuna fishing costs $600 million a year.
