Tennis player Eugenie Bouchard was left with her head in her hands after being asked by a male reporter to 'twirl' after her latest win at the Australian Open.

The 20-year-old Canadian was visibly surprised when conducting the on court interview with Channel Seven's Ian Cohen, who asked the former semi-finalist to "give us a twirl and tell us about your outfit".

Bouchard, who had just beaten competitor Kiki Bertens 6-0 6-3 in under an hour, questioned the request when asked at the Margaret Court Arena.

Instructed to “twirl, like a pirouette, here you go”, the elite athlete spun around before laughing and hiding her face in her hands.

Bouchard later told media that the exchange was “very unexpected”.

“I don’t know, an old guy asking you to twirl,” she said.

“It was funny.”

The request was reportedly in response to Bouchard's online comment about fellow athlete Serena Williams' outfit.

While Bouchard was good natured about the request in later interviews, fans were less impressed.

Many took to social media to post their disappointment.
