Europe's dictatorship Belarus holds vote

The former Soviet republic Belarus, which the US has labelled as Europe's last dictatorship, is holding parliamentary elections.

Belarus is holding parliamentary elections, with pro-regime candidates expected to receive the majority of the 110 seats in the lower house.

The former Soviet republic, which the United States has famously labelled as Europe's last dictatorship, has been praised as more democratic in recent years.

The European Union removed sanctions against Belarus' longtime leader, Alexander Lukashenko, last year in support of the country's course.

The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe will have 400 monitors observe Sunday's elections.
