Ex-Aust centre Tonga in Leigh league deal

Former Australian and Queensland State of Origin player Willie Tonga has signed a two-year deal with English Championship rugby league team Leigh.

LONDON PA-AAP Dec 7 PA - Ambitious English Championship rugby league team Leigh have signed former Australian and Queensland State of Origin player Willie Tonga.

After being released by Super League outfit Catalans Dragons, the Centurions have announced the 32-year-old centre has agreed on a two-year contract.

His signing follows those of ex-NRL players Cory Paterson, Reni Maitua and former Man of Steel Rangi Chase.

It adds to an aggressive off-season recruitment drive by Leigh as they look to secure a place in the top division in 2017.

Coach Paul Rowley said the opportunity to sign Tonga came after a rigorous search for another outside back.

"To finally land a player of Willie's quality is very pleasing. This is another positive step in the progression of our club."

Tonga joined the Dragons last year after NRL stints at Parramatta, Canterbury and North Queensland. He made 18 Super League appearances for the French side.
