A former Australian soldier who fled to war-torn Afghanistan more than a decade ago may now be training fighters against Western forces in Syria.

Al-Qaeda's latest online magazine about Syria includes an article on a member known as Usama Hamza Australi, believed to be Australian Mathew Stewart.

In the article Australi says he is from Queensland and is now working as a military trainer with the al-Qaeda-linked group Jabhat Al Nusrah.

The Australian Federal Police say they do not comment on specific security or intelligence matters.

Anyone fighting with, providing material support to or associating with a terrorist group is committing a serious crime and will be subject to the law, the AFP said on Tuesday.
