Ex-NBL star Greer to lead new franchise

Former Melbourne Tigers skipper Tommy Greer has been appointed general manager of the new NBL franchise, whose location is still to be decided.

The NBL have appointed former star player Tommy Greer as the general manager of the competition's new team despite the location of the franchise still undecided.

Melbourne is the clear frontrunner for a second NBL franchise, although groups in Tasmania, Perth and Sydney are pushing for inclusion for the 2019/20 season.

Greer has strong ties to Melbourne, captaining the Melbourne Tigers during a 227-game career and was a member of their 2006 and 2008 title-winning teams.

Since turning administrator, Greer has played a key role in relaunching the NBL as general manager of major events and programs, including the coming NBL-NBA games and NBL Next Gen Camp.

Greer has also led the NBL's administrative push for a new franchise, with the ninth club licence recently granted to Romie Chaudhari, the co-owner of the EPL club Swansea City.

Chaudhari will work with the NBL to select the best location, with competition owner Larry Kestelman previously vocal about his preference for another team in Victoria.

However, there are concerns about the lack of training and match-day facilities, as Super Netball teams, the Australian Open tennis and regular concerts already share the same space.
