Former Queensland deputy premier and treasurer Terry Mackenroth has died after being diagnosed with cancer.

The 68-year-old former Labor MP died on Monday afternoon, two weeks after a lung tumour was discovered following his admission to Brisbane's Mater Private Hospital with pneumonia.

In a statement, Mr Mackenroth's family said he had wanted to beat the illness.

"Terry was determined to fight the cancer however the tumour was too aggressive and, following his recent pneumonia, it was a battle he just couldn't win this time," the statement said.

"He will be remembered for his love and loyalty to his family, his colleagues and many friends."

Mr Mackenroth was diagnosed with lung cancer 20 years ago in 1998, but went on to become deputy premier and treasurer after making a full recovery.

He retired from state parliament in 2005.

Ex-Labor MP Robert Schwarten, a parliamentary colleague of Mr Mackenroth's, said his friend of 40 years would be missed.

"He was without doubt one of the shining lights of the Labor cabinet ... I always said he was a tough politician with a heart of gold," Mr Schwarten told AAP.

"He was a great political tactition and he was still doing that right to the end, unfortunately he died too young."
