Widnes are releasing Australian forward Jack Buchanan at the end of the season after failing to agree terms on a new deal.

The 25-year-old prop has made 39 appearances for the Vikings since joining them from Wests Tigers halfway through last season.

"Whilst we offered Jack a contract extension that we felt recognised his value to the team, we were unfortunately unable to come to an agreement," coach Denis Betts said.

"Jack has been a great ambassador for the Vikings and an excellent player on the field and he leaves with our respect."

Buchanan becomes the sixth departure from Widnes, who are battling to avoid relegation from Super League.

Chris Bridge and Eamon O'Carroll have retired while Manase Manuofakoa is moving to France, Corey Thompson is joining Wests Tigers and Tom Armstrong has signed for Toronto Wolfpack.

Forwards Sam Wilde (Warrington) and Will Matthews (St George Illawarra) are the Vikings' only confirmed signings so far but Betts says he is actively looking for further replacements.

"The money from these departures has supported the Vikings to secure renewals of key players this year and offer professional terms to graduates of our academy system," he said.

"It has also enabled us to secure the services of Will Matthews and Sam Wilde, who are exciting additions to our squad. We are continuing to explore other opportunities to strengthen our team, as we plan for next season."
