Independent senator Tim Storer has applied to set up his own national political party.
The South Australian senator has asked the Australian Electoral Commission to register the name Tim Storer Independent SA Party ahead of the next federal election.
In his application, the former member of Nick Xenophon Team said the party's four principles are integrity, fairness, prosperity and sustainability.
Senator Storer faces an uphill battle to retain his seat at the next election, but is aiming to drum up support for his centrist agenda.
Gaining party registration would boost his chances as it allows the grouping to receive "above the line" votes in the Senate ballot.
Broad-based tax reform, rather than the government's plans targeting company and personal income tax, is one of the key issues Senator Storer has pursued since entering parliament.
He also wants SA to become a hub for advanced manufacturing, with a focus on electric vehicles to replace the death of the state's car industry.
Senator Storer entered parliament in March after former NXT senator Skye Kakoschke-Moore was disqualified for holding dual citizenship.
He was next on the NXT Senate ticket, but had left the party after the election and sits as an independent.
